How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Would you wear tennis shoes to an interview? Or sandals in the snow?

What if you didn't have the luxury to make these choices?

Duluth Reading Corps member Lara Olsen at Lakewood Elementary kicked off, with the help of the Boy Scouts, a project called Soles4Souls. She says, “While we take our footwear for granted, many people in the world do not even have one adequate pair of shoes." Lara is organizing a drive to collect new or gently used shoes for an organization called Soles4Souls. Soles4Souls collects, cleans and distributes shoes all over the country and world to people in need--in poverty and homelessness, after disasters and to children.

Lara talked with her Duluth site, Lakewood Elementary, about the need for shoes and how shoes can greatly impact someone's life. They brainstormed how they could help and how to get the word out about the drive. They created fliers and posters and are now in the process of collecting the shoes. The drive will close at the end of March and Lara and her site will box up the shoes and send them off.  Kids will have a small celebration party to recognize their efforts. Thank you Lara for your service!

  1. Wow - the opening question posed in this post is thought-provoking. It sounds like a great project.
