Backyard Treasures reading is a treasure in itself

Rainy days are always a time for adventure for kids. I know I used to love to play in the puddles-don't tell me you didn't! Well rainy days and finding treasures is the premise of local author M.J. Alexandra's first book, Backyard Treasures. The book chronicles the adventures of Alexandria as she searches for treasures left behind after a rain storm.

Last Satuday March 28, the Minnesota Literacy Council held a book reading in appreciation of Alexandra at the MLC location on Lake St. The event entailed a reading from the author herself, a Q&A for adults and budding writers who are aspiring to write their own book one day, and art activities for kids which included decorating bags, journals, and/or umbrellas from the event.

"Yes the [event] turned out nicely," said Susan Godon, Development Director of the MLC. "She had lots of helpful advice for beginning writers. She and Jason, her husband, learned a lot in the process and are very helpful."

The inspiration for her book is her daughter, Alexandria. She originally wrote it as a bedtime story for her, but now it's a bedtime story for many children! And since M.J. Alexandra is donating 10% of her proceeds to the MLC, MLC and Minnesota Reading Corps friends can get 10% off their purchase of the book.

  1. I love the upbeat spirit of the reports shown on your blog page. They are sure to inspire teachers and others to give more attention to struggling readers (and writers). Marion Goodman
