Nation's Dropout Crisis

In a recently released report by the National Center for Education statistics, the nation faces a high school dropout crisis.

According to the report, 25 percent of all students- almost 40 percent are black and Hispanic students- don't succeed in graduating on time. These numbers reflect the failure of schools providing a world-class education.

Obama's agenda is committed to improve the lowest-performing schools across the country. This includes the 2,000 high schools that produce half of our nation's dropouts and as many as three quarters of minority dropouts.

There are $4 billion reserved for these turnarounds. This includes resources available to support states' efforts to build data systems that measure whether students are on track for graduation and how to help them if they're not. Much like the data that was calculated for Minnesota's list of the 34 lowest-perfoming schools in the state that was released a few weeks ago. These calculations are a necessary first-step in Obama's administration's plan to improve education across all spectrums.
