The official 2010-2011 Reading Corps year commenced last Monday August 2 and the air at the MRC is filled with excitement! Staff is busy getting newcomers situated while returning members are busy planning initiation for the first years. If you had to think twice about that, then you know you are gullible! But what's not a joke is the anticipation that hangs over members to start the upcoming school year.
For some first-year members the start can be an anxious period, but that all changes when members return for a second year. "I'm excited for this year because I'll be starting off with the knowledge and patience that I gained last year, and I won't be so nervous to try and fit in at the school!" said Allie Riley, a second year volunteer at the MRC.
Allie became a member last year and returned for round two. She was stationed at Roosevelt Elementary in St. Paul and will be at Open World Learning Community this upcoming year. Her reasons for joining the first time around was because of her belief that literacy improves children's communication skills. "Communication is essential to giving people a strong voice and becoming active, engaged citizens."
For second-year member Becky Spitzack, being a MRC member offers her work on a daily basis even though she performs the work as a service. "It is a privilege and joy for me to do this." Becky will return to Roosevelt Elementary in Fairbault for her second term.
"I joined for a second year because I felt I had learned so much, and had such a great time with the kids, that to put it all behind me and move on would be a waste of that knowledge," Allie said. As far as being a leader to the first-years, Becky says, "I'll listen and encourage them. I'll reassure them that what they are doing is great."
So first-years, have no worry. You won't be abandoned and left to the dogs. Have fun and enjoy the experience!
