Up until third grade, students learn to read and after third grade, students read to learn. It is the job of the members of the Minnesota Reading Corps (MRC) to improve the reading abilities of those students who would be left behind without help.
The Minnesota Reading Corps will begin accepting applications for the 2010-2011 program year on December 15th. For further information about how to become involved, look here. Applications submitted before February 1st will be given priority consideration. After that date, interview and selection is a rolling process.
Members of the MRC spend a year of service tutoring students through research-based one-on-one interventions or immersive group activities. Each day is a mark of progress and also a test of each member’s passion and dedication. Members say the most rewarding part of their service is the positive impact that they have on their students.
Members of the MRC receive training and are either placed at a Pre-K site with a group of students and a lead teacher, or a K-3 site where they tutor students one-on-one. The opportunity to get experience in a school with professional educators and program coordinators is valuable for anyone interested in education, whether just beginning a career or transitioning to a new one.
