It was a harsh reality check when some high school principals saw their school listed as one of the 34 lowest performing schools across the state. Especially Lisa Shellum, superintendent and principal of Butterfield High School located in southwestern Minnesota.
In an article released by MPR last week, it is under Obama's regime that each state across the U.S. is required to calculate data in order to come up with the lowest-achieving schools. This is because he is making an effort to help these schools turn around by giving each state a set amount of money- a lot of money, at that.
Minnesota is set to receive $34 million- that means a million dollars to each school on the list. The schools also have to follow one of four models to turn the school around, some of which include shutting the school down or firing teachers.
The MRC is used because it helps children get back on track for reading and, therefore, improving school's reading and test scores. Kris Jensen, a volunteer coordinator for the MRC, works with members at Maxfield Magnet Elementary, one of the schools on the list. "One way that we are helping...is through the support of the dedicated community volunteers with the MRC," Kris said. "Beyond the focus on literacy, our volunteers also build trusting relationships with students and serve as positive role models- two important components of academic success."
